![]() ![]() In this role, she played an integral part in mentoring young eye surgeons in the areas of career and leadership development. Patel became a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Young Ophthalmologist Committee for 3 years and then served as Chair for 4 years. She was placed on the prestigious “The Power List” of the top 100 most influential women in ophthalmology worldwide in 2021 by The Ophthalmologist. Patel is internationally recognized for both her clinical and surgical expertise as well as her leadership and mentorship of young ophthalmologists across the globe. She started the Women in Ophthalmology at Emory group, the Emory Women in Medicine and Science, and the Emory Eye Center Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committees. While at Emory, she mentored many students and residents as they began their careers. She took pride in providing high-quality, top-notch care with empathy to patients and their families. She has served as team ophthalmologist for both the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Falcons. She is very experienced with cataract surgery, glaucoma, retinal diseases, lasers, injections, and inflammatory eye conditions. Patel saw a wide dephth and breadth of complex eye conditions. She is one of only 5 ophthalmologists in the state with special training in inflammatory disorders of the eye. She built a busy clinical and surgical practice at Emory University and the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Patel returned to Georgia in 2010 to serve the community that had taught her so much. She completed her fellowship subspecialty training in medical retina and uveitis at the prestigious University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine/ Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles.ĭr. Patel moved to Georgia for her residency training at Emory University where she was chosen to be chief resident. She chose to pursue ophthalmology as a career to help people like her father save vision and retain their quality of life. During medical school, her father suffered from a chronic, potentially blinding eye condition. Patel was born and raised in Nashville, TN where she attended Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering and medical school.
